What powertrain is housed inside the 2019 Ranger?

Under the hood of the 2019 Ranger, Ford only needs to consider one type of engine in order to earn top ratings across the board, and that is their award winnings 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-4 engine. The engine utilizes a direct fuel injection system with its DOHC valvetrain toting four valves per cylinder with twin independent variable camshaft timing. This pairs well with Ford’s introduction of their lightweight high-strength aluminum cast pistons with a low-friction skirt coating and steel ring carriers to effectively improve performance and push out a compression ratio of 10.0:1. This powertrain is capable of churning out a high-end 270 horsepower and best-in-class 310 lb-ft of torque beating out the other gasoline-based engines in its class. The Ranger uses this powertrain and sturdy foundation to boast an impressive 1,860 lbs payload capacity and a best-in-class max tow capacity of 7,500 lbs. With this high performing powertrain, Ford has even established the 2019 Ranger as a fuel economy powerhouse clocking a best-in-class combined rating of 23 mpg.

What are the parts of the drivetrain featured?

Supporting the engine and completing the powertrain is a solid crew of components featured within the 2019 Ranger. Ford offers a selection between their standard rear-wheel drive with an open differential, an upgraded rear-wheel drive with electronic locking differential, and 4x4 all-wheel drive with a front open differential and the option between open or electronic locking differential in the rear. This system works well with the Ranger’s ten-speed SelectShift automatic transmission allowing you to either manually set the shift or take the smooth performance of the automatic transmission while on and off the road bringing a final drive rear axle ratio of 3.73:1.

What optional packages are offered that enhance performance?

On top of having a sturdy and powerful core, the 2019 Ranger comes with a multitude of features that enhance the convenience and performance of the truck. Coming in at higher level trims you can find features such as LED headlights and taillights, LED cargo lamp, a 110-volt power outlet, keyless entry and ignition as well as remote tailgate locking, and more. Ford also offers a couple of optional packages that further enhance the Ranger’s performance including the FX4 Off-Road package and the Trailer Tow package. At the lower trim levels if you are looking for more off-road exploration, the FX4 Off-Road package is something that will interest you bringing in features such as upgraded shocks and suspension, a rear axle that locks electronically, tow hooks placed in the front, underbody skid plates, and Ford’s terrain management system with Trail Control that provides a low-speed crawl control system. The optional Trailer Tow package adds a four-pin/seven-pin wiring harness and a Class IV trailer hitch to help handle high weight payloads.

The 2019 Ford Ranger establishes itself as one of the best powertrains on the road with multiple best-in-class ratings across the board. We were impressed at how their EcoBoost Inline-4 does not sacrifice performance for fuel efficiency utilizing engine stop-start technology and other features to give it a best in class fuel economy rating.
