2022 Ford Explorer
Roomy, capable, and versatile, the three-row 2022 Ford Explorer is the perfect SUV for hauling families and towing boats and trailers. With jaw-dropping looks, several powertrains, and lots of innovative cargo solutions, the 2022 Explorer gives other midsize SUVs a run for their money.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2022 Explorer comes in eight trims: the base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, King Ranch, and the luxurious Platinum. You can get the Limited and Platinum trims as a hybrid. Modern styling helps define the exterior of the 2022 Explorer. The front of this SUV has a bold look with a handsome honeycomb grille that integrates into the wide rectangular-shaped headlights.
The sloped roof of the Explorer leads to the squared back end, creating a sporty appearance. On the XLT and higher trims, the Explorer gets roof rails, and the ST-Line has a snazzy look with 20-inch wheels and a black grille with tinted headlights and taillights.
Engine (Power)
Under the hood of the five lower trims, you'll find a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The upper three trims get a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 EcoBoost engine that pumps out 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid trims have a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that pairs with an electric motor for an output of 318 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission pairs with all engines.
Performance
All trims come equipped with rear-wheel drive except the Timberline, which comes standard with intelligent four-wheel drive. The latter drivetrain is available for the other trims. If you plan on taking your Explorer off-roading, choose the Timberline. It comes with protective skid plates, a 3.58 Torsen limited-slip rear differential, and a unique terrain management system with extra modes. The other trims have a standard terrain management system. All trims come with trailer sway control, and when properly equipped, the 2022 Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
You'll find room for up to seven people in the three rows of seats. The lower trims come with cloth seats and an eight-way power driver's seat. Move up to the higher tiers, and the Explorer comes with 10-way power-adjustable luxurious leather seats, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, and on the King Ranch, real wood trim. Depending on the flexible seating configurations, you can get between 18.2 and 87.8 cubic feet of storage space inside of the Explorer.
Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system comes with an 8-inch touch screen or an available 10.1-inch LCD capacitive portrait touch screen. Both versions of the touch screen have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. You can listen to your audio through the standard six-speaker stereo or choose the available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium system that comes standard on the upper trims.
Safety Features
The 2022 Explorer comes with Ford Co-Pilot360 safety technology. Key driver-assist features include a pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a lane mitigation system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Available features include adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and side-wind stabilization.
